How Exercise Can Boost Productivity

It is no secret that exercise can vastly improve your health. However, lesser known is that exercise can increase your overall productivity. The increased energy and focus that physical exercise brings also transfers over to the workplace. More and more, companies are jumping on board with exercise breaks during work hours. Studies have shown that just 30-60 minutes of exercise during a lunch break resulted in an average performance boost of 15 percent. While it is becoming increasingly common for managers to incorporate physical health elements into the office, such as standing desks, yoga ball seats, and healthy snack options, it takes a unique, forward-thinking mindset to allow your employees time during the workday to workout.

Few will contest that the benefits of exercise are vast and detailed. When it comes to the directly work-related benefits of exercise, the list is still considerable. While the physical aspect of exercise is often the focus, consider the following cognitive benefits of incorporating regular exercise into your routine:

  • Improved concentration
  • Sharper memory
  • Faster learning
  • Prolonged mental stamina
  • Enhanced creativity
  • Lower stress

Without doubt, these cognitive benefits are attributes you desire among all of your employees. By making small changes, such as attending a yoga class at lunch or a Pilates class before the workday starts, you can avoid the two o’clock slump and keep office morale up all through the work week.

While being able to exercise during the workday may sound like a far-fetched dream, it doesn’t have to be. Many office spaces are offering gyms and group classes to employees, even individual companies are starting to offer in-house classes to their employees. If you work at a small company that is still growing and doesn’t have these resources yet, there is always the old fashioned, and free, option of taking a walk during lunch, walking to or from the office, or standing at your desk instead of sitting all day. Even a simple 15-20 minute workout a few times a week will have its benefits and will be easy to stick to.

The personal benefits of exercise are the main motivating factor for many, however, as a manager or company owner, you want to see your employees at their top-performance for business reasons as well. When you encourage exercise and a healthy lifestyle, not only will your employee productivity rise, but the general health of the office will rise as well. This rise in health conscious behavior can lead to lowered insurance costs as well as fewer sick days taken. Studies show that incorporating just 2.5 hours of exercise per week into the workday led to a noticeable reduction in absences.
